The trophy is named after Jules Rimet [1930-1970]
the FIFA president who founded the tournament.
The original Trophy was stolen in England in 1966 and
found in a rubbish heap in Scotland. It was stolen again
in Brazil in 1983. Stolen for a second time, it is thought
to have been melted by criminals. The Brazilian Football
Association replaced it with a duplicate.
Italian sculptor Silvio Gazzaniga was chosen to create
the new trophy. It is made from 18-carat gold, is 14 inches
tall and weights 11 pounds. West Germany was the first
champion to win the cup in 1974.
To ensure the trophy's security, the winners receive only
a gold-plated copy. The original remains with FIFA. |
